• Compatibility with physical and chemical UV filters
• Enhanced moisturizing effect in makeup products
• High powder dispersion capacity
• Usable in hot and cold processing
• Easy to use
Emulsion properties with Olivatis 12:
• Fresh and light texture
• High moisturizing and softening properties
• Excellent water resistance
• Suitable for sensitive skin
• Improved preservation (water phase isolated from the environment)
• No need for a co-emulsifier
• Better skin hydration
• High water resistance (especially important for sunscreens and waterproof foundations)
• Capability to include high amounts of electrolytes, glycols, or glycerin
• Non-sticky texture
• Good powder dispersion ability
Applications:
• Skin creams and lotions
• Sunscreen products
• Makeup products
Main function: emulsifier
Usage:
Olivatis 12 is a W/O emulsifier for hot and cold processes. It is suitable for emulsions containing up to 75% water. As the oil concentration increases, viscosity decreases; if more than 25% oil is required, adding wax (such as cetyl palmitate, beeswax, or hydrogenated oils) can increase viscosity. Water-dispersible gums have little to no effect on W/O emulsion viscosity.
Recommended dosage:
Typically, the best results are achieved at 2.5 - 3.5%. The percentage may vary depending on the nature and quantity of oils.
Storage:
Store in a cool, well-ventilated area in a tightly sealed container.
Emulsification process:
Olivatis 12 is suitable for both hot and cold processing.
Three key recommendations for use:
1. The water phase must contain all water-soluble ingredients; do not add water-soluble ingredients at the end.
2. The water phase should be added slowly.
3. The pH should be adjusted before emulsification, not at the end of the process.
Cold process:
• Disperse oils with Olivatis 12 (Phase I)
• Dissolve water-soluble ingredients in water (Phase II), check and adjust pH before mixing
• Slowly add Phase II to Phase I while stirring intensely; viscosity increases as Phase II is added
Hot process:
• Disperse oils with Olivatis 12 (Phase I), heat and melt
• Dissolve water-soluble ingredients in water (Phase II), check and adjust pH at room temperature before mixing, heat to the same temperature as Phase I
• Slowly add Phase II to Phase I while stirring intensely; viscosity increases as Phase II is added
Emulsion stabilization:
• Electrolytes: Magnesium sulfate (0.5-1.5%) is usually the best choice
• Glycerin and glycols: 2% or more – they help stabilize W/O emulsions and can be used in higher concentrations
• Magnesium stearate: Adding 0.75-1.25% to the oil phase enhances stability; ensure pH of the water phase is below 7.0
Typically, increasing glycols thickens emulsions, reducing the need for wax.
Usage with powders:
• Hydrophobic powders (e.g., coated TiO2) should be added to the oil phase
• Hydrophilic powders should be pre-dispersed in the water phase before addition
Usage with silicones:
• For emulsions containing silicones, a silicone/ester-oil ratio of up to 50% is recommended
• Mixing with esters or oils is advised before following the standard process
• Adding silicone oils typically increases viscosity, requiring longer homogenization
Incompatibility:
• Olivatis 12 has no known incompatibilities except with surfactant-like substances (e.g., cetrimonium chloride), which may destabilize the emulsion.
Preservation:
• It is recommended to add preservatives to the water phase before emulsification. Adding them after emulsification may reduce their effectiveness. Since the water phase is isolated from the environment, there is a lower risk of contamination by mold and aerobic organisms.
